Discover Baka Umai

If you’ve ever wandered down Hawthorne looking for something memorable to eat, Baka Umai at 4703 SE Hawthorne Blvd #100, Portland, OR 97214, United States is the kind of place that stops you mid-step. I first walked in on a rainy Portland evening, expecting a quick bite. Instead, I ended up staying for nearly two hours, chatting with the staff and working my way through more of the menu than I’d planned.

The vibe is casual but intentional. You can tell right away that this isn’t a rushed operation. From the open kitchen setup to the careful plating, there’s attention to detail everywhere. Portland is known for its competitive food scene, especially when it comes to Asian cuisine, and according to Travel Portland and local dining reports, Japanese-inspired eateries are among the most searched dining categories in the city. That makes consistency and quality non-negotiable here-and it shows.

Let’s talk about the menu. The ramen is the star, but it’s not the only reason people come back. I ordered a rich tonkotsu ramen on my first visit. The broth had clearly been simmered for hours, developing that creamy, collagen-rich depth that ramen lovers look for. Serious Eats once broke down the science behind tonkotsu, explaining how long boiling times emulsify fat and gelatin into a silky texture. You can taste that technique in every spoonful here. The noodles had the right bite-firm but not stiff-and the chashu pork was tender without falling apart.

On another visit, I tried their rice bowls and small plates to get a broader sense of the kitchen’s range. The karaage chicken had a light, crisp coating that didn’t feel greasy, which tells me the oil temperature is carefully controlled. In professional kitchens, maintaining oil between 325°F and 350°F is critical for achieving that balance, and they clearly know what they’re doing. Even the side dishes felt thoughtful, not like afterthoughts added to pad the menu.

What stands out most, though, is the balance between authenticity and approachability. The flavors stay true to Japanese comfort food traditions, yet the presentation and portion sizes fit Portland’s modern diner expectations. It’s the kind of place where you could bring a ramen purist or a friend who’s trying it for the first time, and both would leave satisfied.

I’ve also paid attention to how the restaurant handles peak hours. During a busy Friday night, I noticed the staff communicating constantly-calling out orders, double-checking tickets, and pacing dishes so tables weren’t overwhelmed. That level of coordination isn’t accidental. The National Restaurant Association often highlights teamwork and kitchen workflow as key factors in positive dining experiences, and you can see those principles in action here.

Reviews from locals echo similar themes: flavorful broth, generous portions, friendly service. While every restaurant has occasional off nights, I’ve found Baka Umai to be remarkably consistent across multiple visits. That reliability builds trust, especially in a city where diners have endless options.

Another detail worth mentioning is portion control and pricing. In a time when food costs are rising nationwide, this spot still delivers solid value. The bowls are hearty enough to stand alone, but the appetizers make it easy to turn a simple dinner into a shared feast. If you’re exploring Southeast Portland’s food scene, this address on Hawthorne deserves a spot on your shortlist.

There are plenty of ramen shops and Japanese eateries across Portland, but few manage to combine depth of flavor, efficient service, and a welcoming atmosphere quite like this one. Whether you’re scanning online reviews, planning a casual date night, or just craving a comforting bowl of noodles after work, this restaurant delivers an experience that feels both genuine and satisfying.

  • Didn’t expect much but came out so impressed. Been to Japan multiple times and to different cities trying different types of ramen. This one holds up to some of the best of em… seriously. My wife and I were craving spicy ramen and this really hit the spot. Noodles are so well made! And although the habanero mash doesn’t taste like traditional ramen it provides a great kick!

  • Incredible ramen here! I wish I lived closer I would be here all the time. Cozy ambiance and perfect for a quick bite or to catch up w a friend. I got the Yuzu Miso and the Tan Tan dipping noodles. My friends got the Tonkotsu spicy and non spicy. The broth of the yuzu was soooo well balanced. I loved the soft boiled eggs those were def the star of the show. The dipping ramen was incredible as well, and I replaced the chorizo with chashu pork. Will be here again!

  • Reaper ramen is no joke. It’s delicious, but remember, you’re going to have to drive home. My eyes didn’t stop watering for a while after downing that one. The habanero one is the limit for me. Super spicy, utterly delicious, and I can drive home safely. The staff is super informative of their products, and happy to explain them. I’ve had nothing but great experiences coming here, almost weekly. If you’ve never had real ramen, this will be your go to soon.

  • I went solo, ordered, and found a seat immediately. They had quite a few ramen options and I tried their chorizo-men, which was a pork broth mixed with tan tan sauce and chorizo bits for roughly $20. It was pretty good. Service was good, nothing to knock there. Overall, good experience and good food, but also not something special for me. Worth trying though as this spot clearly resonates with others!

  • We're thrilled to discover a great ramen place in SE. Before this discovery we'd trek out to Beaverton. No longer! We ordered the traditional Shio and the Gyokai Tonkotsu both were delicious in their own way. The broth was rich and the dish was nicely balanced. The ramen came out fast and the kitchen really hustles. They live up to their name, the food is Delicious!

  • The tonkotsu broth was perfect. The noodles were chewy and wonderful. There’s a whole perfectly jammy ajitama (ramen egg) in there. Plenty of yummy chasu, menma and I LOVED the pickled (?) shiitake mushrooms. A bright tang against the creamy, rich broth was freaking delightful. Wowowowow. 10/10 I’m a fan. Oh, and it’s all made in house. So impressed. Super happy.

  • Delicious hot bowl of ramen. I had the Traditional Shio or Shoyu bowl. It was delicious. Shop makes their own noodles. I highly recommend this shop.

  • My main thing is I wish there was more vegetables but that's a personal issue for me. Midori mazemen ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - really good but think I liked the red silk tonkotsu ever so slightly more - it was a dry noodle which I expected but I think the ramen hits the spot more - love the pears - wish it was spicier - very creamy, can't taste much shellfish - definitely need to mix it to get the full effect Red silk tonkatsu ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - felt like there was a flavor missing, turned out it was the egg - egg is cooked perfectly - love the mushrooms - not super spicy Habanero tonkotsu ⭐⭐⭐ - not spicy at all - wouldn't order again, just ok tho - upper part of mild, could taste underneath Cho maz ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - full meal, but don't feel full - whole grain noodles though which I appreciate --- drinks --- Hot green tea ⭐⭐ - just ok - microwaved, could taste it, the mug was also super hot compared to the actual tea Blended coconut ⭐⭐⭐ - it's good if it's what you're looking for - not overly sweet - but not 100% for me, just the tiniest bit sweeter than what I like
